VICTIM OF THE REVOLUTION

The Rhinoceros of Versailles (I do not know if he had any other name) was an Indian rhino that was transported from Calcutta to the French King Louis XV in 1770. Louis XV was known for his passion for exotic animals. When the rhinoceros arrived, it was put into the Royal Ménagerie in the Gardens of the Versailles Palace. During 22 years, the rhinoceros was on display to the public. On 23 September 1793 the rhino became victim of the revolution. He was killed savagely – not long after the execution of his his second owner, Louis XVI.

AN OLD COVER

It was in September of 1974, when I got the first prize in the Student Cover Design Competition of Print Magazine. The reward was important for a young designer: I got the magazine for three years. Hard to believe: they arrived from the other side of the iron curtain.  I take care of them ever since. My career started with those journals. The art director of Print magazine was Andrew Kner, with whom I got a good personal relationship, if I had exhibitions in New York, he was always there. Not long ago he died. We will miss you so...

The photos were taken in Jorwert in the summer of 2008, when Elly and Ben visited my exhibition in the cathedral of the town .... Ben Bos the great Dutch graphic designer passed away yesterday. R.I.P.
